This is a place that you either get it or you don't. (And if you don't, stay the hell away from me.) It's also one of the absolute must-visit places around Aspen. It's the antithesis of the worst parts of downtown and it's super-rich everything. This place was here before Aspen lost most of its soul and become nothing but Beverly Hills in the mountains. These are true locals and real people, being themselves, not trying to fawn all over you because management trained them to. The prices are great, the local beer -- craft-brewed and local choices like Colorado Native -- is cheap, and the food is dive-bar satisfying. With plenty of options for vegetarians, too. It's a place with real, organically generated character, not faux-manufactured like so much else in Aspen. If you act like a big city douche, you might not attract the most welcoming service. And that will be entirely your fault. Woody Creek is an institution and a safe haven for real people acting in real ways. If it ever went away, that would be the signal that it's time to nuke Aspen and start again. I'd go so far as to say: Woody Creek is a litmus test. If you like it and get it, there's hope for you yet. If not, Krishna help your soulless self, you might be a lost cause. Get help, and get it fast. Or just force yourself to keep hanging out at Woody Creek until you finally do get it and realize what a total bag of douche you've been until that moment of self-awareness finally descended.

Rude hostess and rude server. When I attempted to order a chicken salad with no tomatoes and avocado, she looked at me like it was the most ridiculous thing she ever heard. The look of disgust remained as I attempted to change my order to a bowl of soup. I have no idea what crawled up the butts of this staff, but I suggest staying clear. FYI - $15 is absurd price for a salad in a dirty dive bar. Unpleasant and confusing are the words I use to describe this hole in the wall. You're better off buying a couple energy bars to tide you over.

What can one say about Woody Creek? After a few days in Aspen, sometimes it is just a good idea to get out of downtown a bit to de-tox and remember that not everyone is a millionaire. Woody Creek would fit the bill. It is not far from town, but you feel like you're in another time zone! Bit of a dive, but not dirty, and sort of an interesting, wacky vibe. The food is decent but nothing spectacular. I had a passable bowl of green chile stew, although it tasted more like a thick posole soup. Tender pork, lots of posole and other veggies, but frankly I would have appreciated more of the green peppers that should be the centerpiece of a really good chile. Also sampled their tamales, again okay but not spectacular. Bottom line, it's probably worth making a trip given the history (this was apparently one of Hunter S. Thompson's regular joints), and the food wasn't bad, but don't expect a meal that will roll your socks up an down either.

Friendly, super casual, good food, been around forever for a reason! Best black bean veggie burger ever! It's hard not to order it every time. Known also for their chicken enchiladas - delicious. Favorite summer spot after a bike ride on the Rio Grand Trail.

A great low key tavern outside of Aspen. This place is good for food and drinks. It has been very popular for quite a long time. I have a special affinity for this place as it was the hangout of Hunter S. Thompson, and I had the pleasure of meeting him here many years ago.

Great food; great atmosphere. If you like a chill place this is for you. At night the christmas lights come on to add to the relaxed vibe. Fun decor inside as well.

Just had a very unpleasant experience at wood creek tavern. My group of three walked in, put our name on the wait list, and we were told we were second in line to be seated. After we got a drink at the bar and waited a while, we watched 2-3 other groups arrive after us and be seated before us. When I politely inquired about this with the hostess/server she explained that her seating policy is more complicated. She was also very rude. Stay away from Woody creek tavern.

Comfort food out in the middle of no where! Food is ok - you go there for the the legend of the place!

Awesome bike stop on a RT bike ride from Basalt to Aspen. Might have missed this sketchy-fun beer/burger joint, if not for the trail's detour. The waitstaff attitude reminds me of Seinfeld's Soup Nazi... Rude on purpose. Don't take it too seriously. But seriously, what's with a $25.99 beef tenderloin filet at a place that doesn't take plastic?! I wanted one of their zany biking jerseys, but didn't have extra $80 cash on me while biking. Oh well. Maybe I'll actually bother finding their website to order one. And, oh, if you just want a beer or other libation, they make you pick it up at the bar and then head into the "corral,' per Colorado law?! Sure met a few funny folks in the corral outside. Worth it.

Crappy service today. Not busy, but a waitress who could careless about providing good customer service. So, my kid accidentally spilled his lemonade. It happens unfortunately and he is not a spoiled brat. The server was so clueless to her customers never noticed as she walked by a couple of times to everyone cleaning the ice and lemonade. These lame things happen with kids and we cleaned the mess up ourselves of our kids mistake, and they didn't have to lift a finger to clean up. This is where service is crap. So we asked for a refill, but without saying anything just lifted up the lemon on a plate. Ok, so it is fresh squeezed and no refills on that drink. But didn't offer anything else or suggest if we wanted to buy another one, just walked off. Lame service because what happens if we didn't like our meal or spilled that, would her response be the same message of no refills on meals, so I don't care about helping our customers experience a positive one. Then to add on top of it the free refill of soda never got refilled. Crap service = crap review for a restaurant that suppose to be an dinning experience that isn't just about how food tastes. Food was good and the atmosphere is unique and grimy.

A must visit on a trip to Aspen or Snowmass. Total dive bar and restaurant that packs them in nightly. The vibe here is total old school ski town with tons of photos on the walls. Waitstaff are friendly and have been there for years. Bartenders remember your face, if not your name. Best things to order: Onion Rings - crispy, perfect circles of onion fried yumminess. And only a $1 to add to your order - just do yourself a favor and order them. If you don't you'll be salivating over them on someone else's plate and trying to keep yourself from stealing one. Burger - a classic Fish Tacos - a great healthy option. Blackened Talapia with all the fixings Nachos - great for sharing. Huge steaming plate with cheese and chips galore. Roast Chicken - HUGE portion. Def best for splitting

So much vibrancy and character at this spot! You can tell just from a drive by or your first step inside that this place is legendary. You can smell it in the air... no you really can! I love that. The beers were cold! The chips, guacamole, and salsa hit the spot with their crunchy salty goodness. The chicken enchiladas topped with amazing just-right-spicy green chile sauce were absolutely amazing. My man loved his meaty medium burger. He also said the tavern is now on his top 5 all-time favorites list, which is a big deal. If you're looking for a classy, healthy, subdued atmosphere just do us all a favor and give this place a miss. You're probably boring, anyway. If you want to hang out with interesting folks, drink solid beverages, and eat real yummy comfort food we'll probably see you there as we work to establish our 'regular-dom'.

Great spot to eat after the easy bike ride from Aspen on the Rio Grande trail. Had the nachos and chicken enchiladas. Red salsa was great
(4)Megan F.
An absolutely classic place - it maintains its charm from days past and I love the vibe every time I am in here. The servers are great and the beverages and food are satisfying.

From locals to tourist, most will find themselves here, experiencing at a piece of Aspen's history. If you are in the mood for a little exercise rent a bike and ride down the bike path to this "Hole in the wall" and if you are too tired to ride back call a cab. They will serve you plenty of margaritas while you wait. Some things have changed over the years, but this is one place that has for the most part been untouched. The picture ladened wall tells of the good times in Aspen's history.
(4)Richard S.
Fun experience and decent food but not sure it's worth the cab or shuttle ride if you are in Aspen/Snowmass. If you have the time and want to venture off a bit to this pretty small place, you won't be let down necessarily.
(3)Spencer K.
WCT is my neighborhood bar, and thus I love the place. It is not a hole in the wall place any more, everyone knows about it. Locals bring all their out of town friends here. Tourists flock here during the summer, most ride bikes from Aspen but don't ride back. (there is a local shuttle racket back to town $$) The food is filling and great, the burger and green chili pork are my staples. All in All Woody Creek Tavern is "Good stuff"

We do not eat from Denver to Aspen just so we can eat and be naughty here. Margaritas, nachos, guac, enchiladas, burritos, and for the kicker, a brownie ala mode. Delicious. Had a place on the patio to tie the dog up with a bowl of water. She was happy people watching. This place is cheese, cheese and more cheese Could smell the brownies baking and could not wait for them to be ready. The were worth the wait. Woody's is our best excuse for heading up to Aspen.

Woody Creek is the type of place that could easily not be as good as you remember it. There is so much fantasy and lore and magic that surrounds the place. It is close to Aspen. It is associated with Hunter Thompson. Everything adds up to hype without bite, but I am happy to report that as of my last visit there was a lot more than hype! I wanted to keep biting my immensely tasty vegetarian tamales. I order them every time, and every time they are just as good as I remember, perhaps even a little better because I show up telling my taste buds, "Now, buds, these might not be quite as delicious as the brain is leading us to remember." But, I love these tamales! True, it is a pain that they only accept cash, but it is one of the few places where it feels right that they're stuck in the 80s. Get over it. The staff is friendly, maybe a tad slow to get your order. However, the food came out lickety-split on our last visit! The only reason I am not giving 5-stars is because I feel like only people who have known the Woody Creek for longer than I have should have that privilege. Weird... I know. Or maybe I just feel like 5-stars would be so un-Hunteresque. Nah, I don't do hard drugs, but I liked that man's style. I digress.

Expensive for what you get. Food quality and wait staff not great. Watch out for the waitress who initially comes around and asks if you'd like chips and salsa making it sound as if it is included....you will get hit with a $9 bill for it. I have no idea how anyone can give this place 4 or 5 stars? I give it a 3 on a good day. The food isn't good and the house salad doesn't even come with tomatoes. I think they paid for the reviews on yelp.
(2)Sharon M.
They only take cash and have an ATM in the back which charges a hefty fee. Food and company are grand. The prices are pricey although they do offer specials. It's a Plethora of who's who on the wall. A Hunter Thompson memorial with photos and even an art library next door. Definitely a must-see. Music at night and I think they started booking original bands for the weekends.
(5)Don P.
Went for the "legend", ended up enjoying the food! GREAT burger and fresh lime juice margs.. Rode the Rio Grande Trail from Aspen... watchout!! the ride back is more than you think after a meal and a few... LOL
(4)Melanie C.
Eclectic decor. More veggie options than I expected. Pleasant outdoor seating, nice break from dusty bike path nearby.
(3)Michael H.
My guess is half the fun is riding a bike out here (about 8 miles from Aspen) and the other half may be the drinks. We did none of the above, but we did eat here today for lunch. Gazpacho was good, Tilapia blackened fish sandwich just ok, homemade chips with guacamole and salsa pretty good, maybe the best food we had here @WCT. I dunno -- it was less than I expected from all the hype. I guess Hunter Thompson saw something here that I missed. Worth a visit just to see if you can find what I missed. An annoyance is cash only policy and prices are high end, but then Aspen is not known for bargains.
(3)Sasha S.
What else are you gonna give the preferred watering hole of the late Hunter S. Thompson but 5 stars? Sit at the bar and light'er up. Get gonzo and don't forget the guacamole. We rode our bikes here on the Rio Grande trail so we didn't have to worry about law enforcement, etc. Another fun Woody Creek fact: At one time the Woody Creek Tavern sponsored a legal defense fund for the CEO of Enron, Kenneth Lay; specifically, a jar on the top of the bar, in which patrons could drop their donations. The jar contained items such as screws, condoms, toothpicks, a small toy figure of a man with broken legs, string, rubber bands, pennies and IOUs. Que viva Raoul Duke!
(5)Andrea C.
The food is o.k. and way over-priced! If you like New Mexico Green Chili, don't order it here. If you don't mind dropping big notes on a burger, than you will like the Tavern. It's worth the experience at least once.

Things change, and this place does too. The food is good but not unbelievable. (Real, and the fake kind) locals do go here, and Hunter's sadly gone. The practiced 'tude from the waitstaff never extends to kids, they are always SO nice to my daughter, even when it's packed and she's poking on her dessert. You go here for the people watching, the stories, and (a little) the food. Does it make sense? I suppose not. But I'll be back.
(4)Jon R.
Solid, great price, very good service, good food. Far off the beaten path. Eclectic mix of hard-core fans, locals, ladies in fur, very well worth the drive, closer to Snowmass than Basalt or Aspen. Highly recommend.
(4)Sarah S.
This is one of those places that you shouldn't skip out on if you're visiting on vacation!
(4)RC B.
Food was good but overpriced. Nice location right off the Rio Grande bike trail but they only take cash so make sure to grab cash before hand or pay the high ATM fee inside the restaurant. They also have wifi but claim they don't have the password, this is upsetting because couldn't get cell service down there. If not for that, I would rate it 4 stars.
(3)Bill S.
Very homely, local tavern/bar with a tradition of having very bossy waitresses. It has a pretty large menu for a tavern, good selection of beers on tap, and great tasting food. It's a bit out of the way, but if you hungry and heading north from Aspen, give it a try!
(4)Corrie C.
This review isn't for the food since we didn't end up eating here (we were confused and actually looking for the wc3 next door), but when we walked in with our 1.5 year old, the staff were so kind and accommodating. They immediately brought out crayons and a booster seat. We will try to fit a meal in here on our next trip.
(4)Tracy S.
The Woody Creek Tavern is no more. The new owners, who had promised the founders that they wouldn't change a thing, did just that. They removed the hummingbird feeders, the children's toys, the cook's health insurance, and forced out the long time waitstaff and bartenders so they could hire cheaper help. Jose the cook is gone now. The food is not the same. The people are not the same. They've kept the decor and the souvenirs that were given to the original owners. I doubt they've accrued any since. It's not the same place at all. Just the name has remained.

On a snowy winter day, my brother in law and I decided to go down the hill for a few drinks and chicken wings at the Woody Creek Tavern. The place was rustic looking, the staff was friendly and the drinks were plentiful. The sheer variety of beer and liquors makes this place The place to be when you get bored in Woody Creek. This place is down the road from the late Hunter Thompson's home...on the way to the bar, we drove right past it and I didn't even know it at the time! The chicken wings were phenomenal, now I see why my brother in law would disappear for awhile.... The staff are your typical small town friendly types. People know one another up here....the gossip can get thick...and it sure makes for good entertainment. I'd recommend this place to anyone visiting the Aspen Area.

Came here with a group of friends on a busy night and it was PACKED! While it is a local joint, being so close to the resort they get a lot of visitors. The decor is outstanding. The old style coolers behind the bar are covered with signs, stickers, and memorabilia from days past. Hunter S Thompson graces the wall amidst various tchotchkes. They had a heater outside so you could hang out and drink your beer while waiting without being too cold. Although those heaters make you choose whether you want a cold butt, or cold front! You have to keep turning every so often and it makes conversing a bit awkward. Better to make it into a game! Drink every time you are butt-warming! Anyways, Rachel Ray came here and recommended the margaritas. I have to say they were pretty good. The fare tends to be mexican-esque. I had a blackened fish taco and it was fantastic. I would totally go back here for some good food and a good time.
(4)Danny D.
they only take cash and beware the atm will charge you a arm and a leg to get it out as well as check your balance. the food was okay the beer choices were like the healthy gluten free beers on draft.
(4)John L.
I post this review in honor of Hunter S. Thompson's birthday. We arrived around 11am, just before 26 tourists piled in. Nevertheless, the servers worked together greatly to accommodate us. Lesser restaurants would have ignored the smaller party, blaming the bigger one. Woody Creek Tavern is not a lesser restaurant. We ordered 5 huevos rancheros and 5 Bloody Marys with Wood Creek vodka. Everything was excellent and the staff was so friendly and nice.
